The former governor of Delta state between 1999 and 2007, was however absent at the inaugural meeting of the committee on Wednesday, August 9, at the party's headquarters in Abuja.

Former Senate President, Senator David Mark, said on Thursday that the Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP), must conduct a hitc-free non-elective convention so as to re-invent the party.

"We are doing very well as a party and as a committee".

Also speaking at the venue, the National Chairman of the party's National Caretaker Committee, Ahmed Makarfi, assured members of the party that the issues relating to the South-West zone of the party had been resolved. I have no reason whatsoever to leave the party.

"I believe that a lot of people who thought that the party was going to implode will realise that we are back and ready to offer what it takes to better the lives of Nigerians".

"From the way things are going presently in this country, I believe Nigerians will realise that PDP is the only alternative that can bring Nigeria out of her present economic challenges". Many of our members that left earlier due to one form of disagreement or the other will return back to their party because the National Caretaker Committee has constituted a Reconciliation Committee as well as a Contact and Mobilization Committee to reach out to them.

Analysts feel if slippages come below Rs 3,000 crore (against Rs 2,951 crore in Q4FY17) then that will be positive. Its total expenses were at Rs 715.78 crore as compared to Rs 599.28 crore in June quarter last fiscal.

According to Makarfi, "In politics there are always issues but what is important is that we sit down and resolve the issues in a civil manner".

Indeed. And the electorate can see through all the politicking and selfish interests in both the exits and the speeches of acceptance in new parties and what have you.

"As a party we will continue to work hard not to lose anybody, but will work much harder to bring in more members to the party", he said.

Mark, in a statement on Thursday ahead of the convention fixed for Saturday, said that the party must ensure a hitch-free convention that would further strengthen its base.

Mark recalled his pledge never to dump the party after it lost to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2015 general elections. I have risen to where I am as a Senate President on the platform of the party.

He expressed optimism about the future of the party after the convention, but warned members that the party could not afford to make another mistake.
