Riz Ahmed could join Tom Hardy in Spider-Man spin-off 'Venom'

10 Août 2017

It looks like Venom is eyeing yet another A-list actor to join its ranks.

Riz Ahmed is being eyed to star in Sony's upcoming Spider-Man spinoff Venom that stars Tom Hardy in the title role.

Of course, there is also a chance Ahmed is being eyed for a heroic role. Ahmed's character is being kept under wraps, but insiders say he would not be playing the villain Carnage, which Sony has been looking to cast.

Ahmed is in early talks to appear in the film from director Ruben Fleischer, Variety reported. Meanwhile, some other actors including Matt Smith (Doctor Who), Pedro Pascal (Narcos) and Matthias Schoenaerts (The Danish Girl) are up as the front runner for the role.

Sony has already made it clear that "Venom" will play no part in the Spider-Man universe, and that the film will stand on its own.

If you are not familiar with Ahmed, then you have missed out on some of Hollywood's better pictures as of late.

Since his inception in 1988, Venom has been one of "Spider-Man's" most popular characters, making it a top priority for the studio to get the movie off the ground.

Throughout the history of Marvel Comics, Venom has appeared alongside Spider-Man, Iron Man, Deadpool, Hulk, and other Marvel Comics characters.

Ahmed, who performs music under the name Riz MC, recently starred in the acclaimed HBO drama The Night Of, which scored him a Golden Globe nomination. That sounds pretty far fetched, but Venom is supposed to be a straight-up sci-fi movie, and potentially R-rated, so maybe it's not too insane.
