Jordanian king arrives for talks with Abbas on Jerusalem, peace efforts

07 Août 2017

Trump's team have yet to publicly commit themselves to the two-state solution, the idea of an independent Palestinian state next to Israel that has been the basis of decades of worldwide consensus.

Abdullah's visit comes amid rising Jordanian-Israeli tensions and is seen as a message to Tel Aviv that the Jordanian monarch is aligning with Palestinians on key issues - particularly concerning a contested Jerusalem holy site.

Jordan's King Abdullah arrived in Ramallah Monday for talks with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas aimed at deepening ties and discussing "current developments in the Palestinian territories" in the wake of last month's crisis over the al-Aksa mosque compound.

In mid-July, Israel imposed a raft of draconian security measures at Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa Mosque complex after two Israeli police officers were killed at the site by alleged Palestinian attackers. The compound, which sits on a tree-lined plateau in the Old City, is also revered by Jews, who call it Temple Mount, the site of two destroyed ancient Jewish temples. The measures triggered protests by Muslims.

In a separate incident as well, an Israeli security guard at Israel's Amman mission compound killed a Jordanian teenager (who he accused of attacking him) and another Jordanian bystander.

Ces blessures sont seulement superficielles et il devrait s'en tirer sans aucune séquelle. La scène est digne d'un film d'horreur. "L'eau froide a engourdi mes jambes".

Palestinian Senior Hamas legislator and east Jerusalem resident Mohammed Abu Teir talks on the phone as he is welcomed by supporters after crossing into the West Bank town of Betunya following his released from Israel's Offer prison and deported to the West Bank, on December 8, 2010.

"This evaluation is very important for us to prepare for the coming stage we expect from Israel and from (Prime Minister Benjamin) Netanyahu personally", Malki said.

Maliki said Abbas and Abdullah also discussed US-led efforts to restart Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, which have been suspended for the past three years, and stated that Israel must "recognise the principle of a two-state solution and end provocative settlement activity that is created to prevent the establishment of a viable, contiguous Palestinian state".

Jordan has been the custodian of Jerusalem's Muslim holy sites since the 1920s.

Jerusalem has been transformed into military barracks, as Israeli forces incessantly pile up restrictions on Muslim prayers and continue to control Palestinian properties.
