Somalia: Key al-Shabaab commander killed

01 Août 2017

The Somalia government on Monday confirmed that an Al-Shabaab commander was killed in drone strikes by US and Somalia security forces in southern region on Sunday. The Al-Qaeda linked insurgents ambushed Ugandan troops that are part of an African Union force as they patrolled a supply route in the hotly-contested Lower Shebelle region, the military said in a statement.

A Somali intelligence official says a USA military airstrike targeted a leader of the al-Shabab extremist group but it is not clear if he was killed.

On July 30, 2017 - the Federal Government of Somalia authorized a coordinated operation with global partners near Torotoroow that killed a high-level al-Shabaab leader. Ali had served as the extremist group's shadow governor for Mogadishu and had been one of its most outspoken officials.

A Somali intelligence official said at least one missile struck a vehicle in which the al-Shabab leader was travelling. The statement says no civilians were killed.

Neymar, au coeur de spéculations sur un éventuel transfert au PSG, a passé la journée de lundi à Shanghai, où le footballeur brésilien a participé à des événements promotionnels et rencontré son compatriote Hulk.

The U.S. military says it carried out a drone strike in Somalia on Saturday and that an al-Shabab member was killed. The extremist group also has vowed to step up attacks in Somalia after the president elected in February declared a new offensive against al-Shabab, which continues to carry out deadly attacks in Mogadishu.

In separate statements, both United Nations and US said the Sunday attack in Somalia's Lower Shabelle region was an assault not only on African Union mission in Somalia (AMISOM) forces but on the people whom they are working to protect. The U.S. conducted this operation in coordination with its regional partners as a direct response to al-Shabaab actions, including recent attacks on Somali forces.

There was no immediate comment from Somali officials.
