EPA proposes adding old timber treatment site near DeRidder to Superfund list

01 Août 2017

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on Monday proposed adding a site near DeRidder in Beauregard Parish to the Superfund list. "I am glad that EPA has heeded our call to add this site to the Superfund list because it gives the EPA leverage to make the polluters pay and to set a protocol for investigation and cleanup". "The site in Deridder is just one of many that need immediate attention", Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality Secretary Chuck Carr Brown said in a statement.

"These chemicals are being discovered in more and more drinking water sources across the nation", Allen said. In 1999, Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics purchased the facility and began operations there, using PFOA in its manufacturing process. "The people, businesses, and environment of Oklahoma will benefit from EPA's work to clean up the Eagle Industries site".

"My goal as Administrator is to restore the Superfund program to its rightful place at the center of the agency's core mission".

These sites can threaten the health of entire communities with short-term or long-term risks. Ecosystems at Superfund sites can be harmed when contaminants accumulate in plants and animals, reducing survival and growth rates, altering the composition of species in an area, seriously damaging or destroying the ecosystem, and rendering fish, shellfish, game and plants inedible.

U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., who joined Schumer past year in calling on the EPA to expedite its response to address water contamination in the village nd take immediate federal action to support and augment state cleanup efforts.

Sites that have been cleaned up through the Superfund program can be reused.

Community partnerships are critical to Superfund site cleanups. EPA typically initiates Superfund involvement at a site because states, tribes or citizens ask for the agency's help.

Nationwide, EPA added seven sites to the NPL and proposed to add four other sites.
