This might have you thinking twice about accepting a slice of birthday cake. "Due to the transfer of oral bacteria to icing by blowing out birthday candles, the transmission of bacteria and other microorganisms from the respiratory tract of a person blowing out candles to food consumed by others is likely".

- Not that anyone is going to stop the practice, but a new study warns that when someone blows out candles on a cake there can be as much as 1,400 percent more bacteria on the cake.

And the results make for a pretty grim read.

But while that might gross you out enough to put you off cake for life, the researchers say the majority of the bacteria is harmless.

The issue again generated much heat and finally Kolay said the scrutiny would be postponed until 9:00 a.m. Neither of these applies to me".

Then they took a deep breath and blew out the candles - they collected frosting and spread it out on agar plates to watch the bacteria grow. After consuming a pizza, volunteers were asked to extinguish the candles by blowing.

During the study, a number of bacteria found on sample cake varied depending on the individual who blew out the candles and on average the number of bacteria increases by 15 times. "We also wanted to simulate a birthday party", said Dawson.

That doesn't mean the bacteria can't spread illness though. "In reality if you did this 100,000 times, then the chance of getting sick would probably be minimal", Dawson told the Atlantic.
