After 19 seasons with Chelsea, Terry has moved to Championship side Aston Villa, where he himself has been named the club captain.

31-year-old Cahill was perhaps an obvious pick for captain, but there were a number of contenders for his deputy, including David Luiz and Eden Hazard. I've had some good moments up until now and this certainly ranks very highly.

Speaking to Chelsea's website after the club officially announced his appointment, Cahill said: "Wherever I've been I've looked at that role [of captain] and what certain players do".

He told football London: "The players that have left the club in recent years are huge names in the sport, huge personalities and characters".

He thinks that experience will help and added: "Obviously there is a bit of extra responsibility, probably off the pitch more than on the pitch now, which will be slightly different for me, but to watch and learn from how John did things when he was here was vital for me".

"I was lucky to have the armband for quite a long time previous year but obviously John was still club captain and a huge figure here, but I gained a lot of experience from that and hopefully I can continue in the same vein this season. It was a nice progression".

Gary Cahill takes over from John Terry.
