Israel installs new security cameras at Jerusalem holy site

Israel Radio said an inner cabinet of Israeli ministers with security responsibilities would meet on Sunday to discuss the security arrangements at the hilltop compound in Jerusalem's Old City. "Israel is playing with fire and is risking sparking a crisis with the Arab and Muslim worlds".

Hundreds of Palestinians have defiantly held their evening prayers outside a Jerusalem holy site, refusing to pass through security measures Israel imposed after a deadly attack there.

Israel's military fortified its troops in the West Bank and placed forces on high alert Saturday, a day after a Palestinian stabbed to death three members of an Israeli family and some of the worst Israeli-Palestinian clashes in years erupted over tensions at the Holy Land's most contested shrine.

Major General Yoav Mordechai, who heads the Israeli defence body for Palestinian civilian affairs, said Israel was open to alternatives to lower the tensions.

Earlier in the weekend, on Friday night, three Israelis were killed in their home in the West Bank settlement of Halamish when police say a young Palestinian man breached the settlement's security fence and stabbed them to death.

"They must know that they will be the main losers because we play an important role in assuring our security and theirs", Abbas said.

On Saturday, Palestinian youths hurled stones and petrol bombs as the army used a bulldozer to close off the attacker's West Bank village and prepare his house for demolition. The military says about 50 people attacked troops who fired back with rubber bullets and tear gas.
