Clint Dempsey Ties Landon Donovan's Record for Most Goals in USA History

23 Juillet 2017

Clint Dempsey is the current face of the U.S. Men's National Soccer Team - and for good reason. He quickly made his presence felt with an assist to Jozy Altidore.

Dempsey reached the mark in just 136 games, while it took Donovan 157 games to reach 57 goals.

Despite not even getting the nod to start the match, Dempsey's 57th tally with the USMNT pulls him even with the program's current all-time scorer, Landon Donovan.

The game turned when US coach Bruce Arena brought in Dempsey as a substitute midway through the second half, and the 34-year-old set up Jozy Altidore for the breakthrough goal before adding his second from a free kick.

Fast facts: Torrence heads into the Western Swing with five wins in his last eight events as he seeks his first world title. Last race: Lewis Hamilton won on his home track in England to move within a point of series leader Sebastian Vettel.

With a win, Team USA will go on to face either Jamaica or Mexico in the Gold Cup Final.

He also scored the tying goal against England in the Americans' 2010 World Cup opener and netted 30 seconds in against Ghana in the US opener at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Often a forward, Dempsey has also played behind the lone striker, on the wing, and up top with another forward.

Dempsey will try to make a similar impact Wednesday when the United States returns to the pitch seeking its second Gold Cup title in the last four years against the victor of Sunday's semifinal between Mexico and Jamaica. He sat out the remainder of the 2016 season after participating in full for the Copa America Centenario last summer.
