Chipotle shuts Virginia store after reports of illnesses

20 Juillet 2017

According to Marsden, the symptoms of customers, who claim to have gotten ill over their food, are consistent with the highly contagious virus, the norovirus. At least one person made two trips to the hospital.

On the other hand, based on the Health Director for Loudoun County, Virginia, the alleged norovirus outbreak could have been spread by a human carrier. It has dealt with norovirus cases prior to this. In August of 2015, over 200 people fell ill in California after eating at a location in Simi Valley.

So, unlike in a case of E. coli, which can contaminate food before it is distributed to restaurants, locations in New York City are unlikely to be impacted by a norovirus outbreak in Sterling, Virginia.

Since then, the chain has worked diligently to regain their customer's trust.

Chipotle closed the Restaurant on Monday voluntarily and will be waiting on results by the end of the week. The news sent its shares down more than 4 percent as skittish investors anxious about the chain's past food scares. By Wednesday afternoon, the stock rebounded a bit, but CNBC states that analysts are a bit hesitant in suggesting whether investors should purchase stock in Chipotle or not after the company's recent struggles.

After the release of the information, the company saw its worst stock decline in seven months.

"We continually strive to find new and innovative ways to ensure that our restaurants are safe", CEO Steve Ells said in a statement. But it didn't immediately return a message asking how many people got sick. Chipotle restaurant workers fill orders. But the company has previously said that given its history, any food safety incidents could have an outsized negative impact on its sales, even if reports turn out to be erroneous or stem from factors outside its control. Officials at health department continue to work to identify the cause of the outbreak.

Chipotle says that the additional closure time allowed multiple teams to thoroughly sanitize all surfaces in the restaurant.

According to BusinessInsider.com, several Chipotle customers reported vomiting, diarrhea, severe stomach pains, dehydration and low grade fevers to iwaspoisoned.com after eating at the Sterling Chipotle this past Friday and Saturday.
