Jamie Murray and Martina Hingis won the mixed doubles title at Wimbledon by beating Henri Kontinen and Heather Watson 6-4, 6-4 on Centre Court.
Federer needed only 1 hour and 41 minutes to dismiss Cilic in the final. But he won the Australian Open this year for his 18th Grand Slam title.
Never count out Roger Federer.
"Winning eight is not something you can ever aim for, in my opinion", Federer said. Federer has upped his game so much that he breezed through Wimbledon without dropping a set.
"It's disbelief I can achieve such heights".
"That would be a joke, if I won three slams this year out of nowhere", said Federer, looking ahead to Flushing Meadows. He then lost to Novak Djokovic in both the 2014 and '15 finals.
"But I always believed".
"Here am I today with the eighth. You could see he started not being able to push off as good and then he started giving us a little bit of a signal that it was not correct 100 percent again, so then obviously we knew that it was a problem".
Federer last won the grass-court major in 2012.

Insurers selling stripped-down plans would be required to also offer traditional Obamacare plans covering preexisting conditions. Insurers were struggling last week to grasp the implications of the legislation, studded with ambiguous language.
Federer's good friend Tommy Haas was also in attendance and the German can be pleased with the fact that he was one of just two people who managed to defeat the Swiss this season.
"I was sad not to be able to compete past year as I love playing there and had not missed the event since 2002", Federer told the ATP website.
"I'll be gone again for the next six months!" He's showing us a lot and I think all the other competitors, especially in tennis as well, now that you're 31, 32, they're going to continue this trend and who knows what else is in store?
"I'll definitely try and get myself organized, prepared and ready so that I'll have the best chance to do well at the US Open", said Federer. Most of all, I admire the fact that Federer has remained free of controversy throughout his career. I played the best tennis of my life.
Beneath a star-studded Royal Box where Prince William and wife Kate rubbed shoulders with actors Hugh Grant and Bradley Cooper, Cilic had his first break point in the fourth game.
Federer trounced seventh seed Marin Cilic 6-3, 6-1, 6-4 to secure his 19th major crown and move clear of Pete Sampras and William Renshaw at the top of the all-time list of men's Wimbledon champions. It was very, very tough to deal with it."Cilic had taken pain relief before the match in a bid to get him through, but he revealed he thought he would struggle once he felt more discomfort in the pre-match warm-up".
The trainer and doctor were summoned before Cilic hid his head in his towel in a desperate attempt to compose himself.
Cilic dropped the set 6-1 and called a medical timeout to have his left foot bandaged and take a painkiller.
