Sam Bird on cusp of huge weekend at New York City ePrix

17 Juillet 2017

Mahindra Racing had a hard start to the New York City ePrix, with Nick Heidfeld not finishing the first race, and Felix Rosenqvist only managing a 15th place finish.

For someone who had never been to New York City in the first 30 years of his life, Virgin DS Racing's Sam Bird certainly looks like he is in his own element here. But after a full course yellow flag incident, Bird resumed his attack.

On Saturday, he became the first victor of the New York City ePrix after holding off Jean-Eric Vergne and Stephane Sarrazin, both of whom belong to Techeetah Racing.

Heidfeld tried to follow Bird past Rosenqvist when the Briton nicked the lead, and although he failed he shadowed his team-mate throughout.

"If you can win two in a row, why not three in a row", Bird said.

On Sunday morning, Bird took won the Super Pole for Sunday's 49-lap race, which will be the championship's 10th round of the season.

More importantly for the man he replaced at Renault, points leader Buemi, Gasly took points off Audi driver di Grassi.

Nicolas Prost wound up sixth in the second Renault e.dams auto, two places behind his stand-in teammate, while Tom Dillmann impressed en route to P7.

Rosenqvist retained second and Heidfeld third, though, as Gasly ran wide, hit the wall on the exit and then on the other side of the track as well as he crossed the line with a crumpled front end.

Jean-Eric Vergne came home eighth for Techeetah despite being forced into an extra pit stop and a strategic error, while Robin Frijns' mammoth first stint gave him plenty of extra energy for the second stint, meaning he could charge to ninth on the final lap.

Formula E returns in two weeks' time with the season-ending double-header in Montreal, Canada.
