Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero signs new four-year deal

17 Juillet 2017

Mourinho added: "Sergio is a great goalkeeper and professional".

Romero said that he was delighted to have signed the new contract with the "biggest club in the world".

Though the agreement just reached with Sergio Romero won't set the world alight, having such quality in such an important position (particularly given the fleeting speculation surrounding David De Gea's future) is paramount to the success of a club of United's stature. "We have great goalkeepers here and we are always learning from each other", Romero told the club's official website. According to the deal, he also has an option of spending another season with the Premier League club after 2021. He had a good season and outstanding performances, especially in our Europa League success.

The goalkeeper's contract was set to expire next season, but now he has signed a new long-term deal and is set to compete with David de Gea and youngster Joel Pereira for game time next season.

'Sergio deserves his contract, and for Manchester United to have Sergio and David is fantastic in such an important role'.

Mourinho's reference to Romero's professionalism is significant.

In fairness, Mourinho did use Romero last season, even starting the veteran for the UEFA Europa League final win over Ajax.

Real Madrid remain keen on Spain's No. 1, and United are expecting Los Blancos to renew their interest in the gifted stopper, per Jamie Jackson of the Guardian.

Romero is yet to feature in the Pre season U.S. tour of United.
