Federer seeks historic eighth title but faces test from Cilic

15 Juillet 2017

The Swiss, level with Britain's William Renshaw and American Pete Sampras on seven titles, is rejuvenated after taking a six-month break past year and enters the final as the clear favorite having not dropped a set in the tournament.

American men's tennis has been an afterthought in major events for quite some time now, but big server Sam Querrey brought the stars and stripes back to the forefront at Wimbledon.

Cilic is the second Croat to reach the Wimbledon final, following Goran Ivanisevic's victory in 2001. On Saturday, she will play for her first Wimbledon championship since 2008 when she takes on 14th-seeded Garbine Muguruza, who advanced to the final by beating Magdalena Rybarikova 6-1, 6-1 on Centre Court. In 2006, he went on to win the title in four sets against Rafael Nadal, while in 2008, he lost to Nadal over five sets in what many consider the greatest match of all-time.

Sam Querrey has won the first set 7-6 (6) against Marin Cilic in the men's semifinals at Wimbledon.

A female spectator needed assistance in the stands during the tiebreaker. The score was 6-6 with Cilic on a second serve. But Querrey won that point and the next one to take the set.

Play in the men's semifinals at Wimbledon has started.

He said they are taller and stronger; that they hit harder and can hurt him, although the same was said about his last victim 26-year-old Milos Raonic, whose analysis of Federer is that the 18-time Grand Slam victor is good at kicking you when you're down.

Federer goes into Sunday's final having yet to drop a set and should he maintain that streak against Cilic, he will become only the second player to have achieved that feat at Wimbledon - Bjorn Borg having done it in 1976.

And his head-to-head record in matches with Cilic suggests he could well be lifting the trophy once again, but the Swiss must be wary of allowing the big-serving Croatian to build momentum.

It almost cost him 12 months ago when they met in the quarter-finals, Cilic taking a two-set lead before letting three match points slip through his fingers. I played great in 2014, 15. The 24th-seeded American eliminated defending champion Andy Murray in the quarterfinals.
