Netflix Orders 'The Umbrella Academy' Live-Action Series Based On Comic Books

12 Juillet 2017

The Umbrella Academy, a graphic novel collaboration between illustrator Gabriel Bá and My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way is coming to Netflix as a live action series.

Umbrella Academy is set to hit Netflix in 2018.

"It's a thrill to be producing this wonderful show for Netflix".

From Universal Cable Productions and Dark Horse Entertainment, the series will revolve around seven superhero siblings - Spaceboy, The Kraken, The Rumor, The Séance, Number Five, The Horror, and The White Violin - as they work together to unravel the mysterious death of their adoptive father, The Monocle, while their divergent personalities and abilities threaten to pull them apart.

For its part, Netflix VP of original content Cindy Holland said in a statement that the network was drawn to the series for its "wholly unique, visual, and stylized" nature. "It's been a passion project for the UCP development crew and we can't wait to bring it to life". Steve Blackman (Fargo, Altered Carbon) will serve as executive producer and showrunner, with additional executive producers Bluegrass Television and Mike Richardson and Keith Goldberg from Dark Horse Entertainment. The tone of the graphic novels is "dark yet humorous, supernatural yet grounded". Gerard Way will serve as co-executive producer.

The premiere announcement of "Stranger Things" Season 2 made fans excited, but what's more exciting is the poster that was released via the show's official Twitter handle.

The comics were created and written by Gerard Way, illustrated by Gabriel Bá and published by Dark Horse Comics. Slater was brought in to pen the adaptation, which he did before segueing to create and executive produce The Exorcist for Fox.
