They were written as backstories to Max's character and to Furiosa's character.

And even catching the flu during a freezing Budapest winter didn't stop her, co-star James McAvoy told Variety.

Director David Leitch, key crew and Oscar victor Charlize Theron take us behind the scenes of her brutal hand-to-hand training.

"I am ashamed that I'm part of an industry that has never allowed a woman to work with a budget higher than what the budget has been on Wonder Woman", she said.

The Variety interview also includes a cool nugget of information regarding Furiosa's creation.

Theron actually trained rigorously for about two months to make sure that she could be her own stuntwoman as much as possible during the film. I had this white hair, kind of like Abbey Lee character. "I just feel like women have been so misrepresented in these films - why do we have to go and see the genre every single time with the girl in the back of the frame in a push-up bra?"

Based on a graphic novel, Theron plays an undercover MI6 agent who is investigating the murder of a fellow agent in this Cold War-set actioner directed by David Leitch ("John Wick", "Deadpool 2").

However, those behind the film seem keen to let people know they're hoping it will be seen as more than that, as they're trying to break some of the female action cliches, not least that the main character can get injured and bruised, as she doesn't fall for the main man.

Universal has released video of the training Theron went through to prepare for her next movie, "Atomic Blonde" (in theaters July 28).
