Trump to Xi: 'Something has to be done' about North Korea

Mattis spoke by phone with South Korean Defence Minister Han Min-koo on Thursday, reaffirming Washington's commitment to the US-South Korea alliance and promising "the full range of US capabilities".

The EU and Japan on Thursday called for further sanctions against North Korea after Pyongyang tested an intercontinental ballistic missile in defiance of repeated United Nations resolutions.

Xi emphasized "efforts to promote talks" with North Korea and did not change his passive attitude regarding pressure that could lead to a destabilization of the regime of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. It has downgraded China's human trafficking status and blacklisted the Bank of Dandong as a "primary money laundering concern" in June.

"The worldwide community should increase efforts in promoting dialogue and controlling the situation when responding to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea's [North Korea's] violations of UN Security Council resolutions", Mr Xi said, quoted by the Xinhua news agency.

Noting that the two countries have made new progress in bilateral cooperation in many fields since the Mar-a-Lago meeting despite some sensitive issues, Xi urged joint efforts with Trump to keep bilateral ties on track and coordinate in worldwide affairs.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang stressed that China "strongly urges North Korea to comply with United Nations resolutions", but calls on all parties to exercise restraint.

North Korea's number one Kim Jong-Un said Tuesday that the shooting of an ICBM on July 4, the day of the national holiday, was a "gift" to "American bastards".

The dialogue was launched by Japanese Deputy Prime Minister Taro Aso and U.S. Vice President Mike Pence in April.

Late on Thursday, court filings made public disclosed that United States authorities were trying to seize millions of dollars from companies that deal with North Korea, including the country's military, from eight large worldwide banks.

He said any country helping North Korea militarily or economically, taking in its guest workers or falling short on Security Council resolutions "is aiding and abetting a risky regime".

"President Trump and President Xi directed their security and economic teams to make progress in upcoming dialogues", the White House statement said.

"I know that China in particular, which is a great trading partner, we will be able to do something that will be equitable and reciprocal", Trump said. North Korea said it tested an ICBM and the United States said that was likely true.

Abe affirmed that the lack of stability in the region had become "increasingly severe" following the first launch of a North Korean ICBM thought to be capable of striking targets on the United States mainland.

'As far as North Korea is concerned, we will have, eventually, success.

"Our experience with China has been. a bit uneven", Tillerson said Friday.

"The relationships that he's building and the comradery that he has is just extraordinary", Cohn said.
