A photo of the first daughter sitting next to Chinese President Xi Jinping, British Prime Minister Theresa May, Turkey's Recep Tayyip Erdogan and German Chancellor Angela Merkel was first tweeted by Svetlana Lukash, who identifies herself on Twitter as a G20 Russian sherpa, a title given to people who help worldwide delegations at large summits.
But Ivanka Trump, an official adviser to the president, took his place instead.
A Russian G20 official, who shared the picture on social media, said the president had left his daughter in his place while he attended bilateral meetings with other world leaders.
The US president had stepped away for a meeting with the Indonesian leader during the G20 meeting.
Ivanka Trump has sat down before with world leaders since her father assumed.
Brian Klaas, a Trump critic and fellow at the London School of Economics, tweeted the photo of Ivanka Trump, adding, "Ivanka Trump, unelected, unqualified, daughter-in-chief, is representing the USA at the G20 summit next to May, Xi, Merkel".
Though Ivanka Trump will be an advocate for We-Fi moving forward, the White House has said she will play no operational, administrative or fund-raising role in the initiative. On Thursday night, they joined Trump in a meeting with Merkel, and Kushner attended Trump's meeting with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto on Friday.
United States bombers join jets from Japan, SKorea for training mission
A day earlier in Poland, Trump said the US was considering "some pretty severe things" in response to North Korea's actions. It said each US bomber dropped a 900-kilogram laser-guided smart bomb that was created to destroy a fortified bunker.
"She's always been great".
Ms Trump had joined her father for an earlier G20 event on Saturday on women's entrepreneurship and finance, along with German chancellor Angela Merkel and Christine Lagarde, director of the International Monetary Fund.
Later in March, she came under fire after announcing she would become an advisor without a specific title, but with an office in the West Wing, a government-issued phone and computer and security clearance to access classified information.
"I am very proud of my daughter Ivanka", he said. But she has also weighed in on major disputes within her father's administration, including disagreeing with her father on his decision to leave the Paris Climate Agreement.
Trump's 35-year old daughter is married to Jared Kushner, one of his top lieutenants, and is an accomplished businesswoman in her own right. "It might be the only bad thing she has going, if you want to know the truth".
During his 2016 campaign, Trump frequently criticized rival Hillary Clinton's ties to her family's Clinton Foundation, which received millions in donations from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and several other Mideast nations for charitable work.
