Ten-man France down England in lively friendly

26 Juin 2017

FRANCE and England fans put football rivalry to one side to honour the victims of the Manchester and London terror attacks with a touching display inside the Stade de France tonight.

France will host England at their national stadium, Stade de France, on Tuesday evening in an worldwide friendly.

After a show of solidarity in a pregame ceremony, England's opener come on the counter-attack in the ninth minute when Raheem Sterling laid the ball off for the overlapping Ryan Bertrand, who sent in a cross for Kane to tap in. We need to see the reality of where we are, to test yourself against the best, so you don't mask where you are in terms of a team.

It was the third successive friendly match that England have failed to win under Southgate, after a 2-2 draw with Spain in November and a 0-1 loss in Germany in March.

"We have been competitive in all three games but we needed to play at our absolute limits to stay in all of those matches and that has shown in the end".

Both teams will wear black armbands for the game and a minute's silent will precede kick-off in tribute to the victims of recent attacks in Manchester and London.

The trio gave the England defence a hard time on several occasions, notably Mbappe, who rattled the crossbar with a curled left-foot shot shortly before setting up Dembele for his maiden goal for France.

"We looked more anxious while they went to 10". The 3-0 victory against Scotland previous year was followed by a defeat in Germany and narrow 2-0 triumph to Lithuania in March.

Despite looking sloppy at times, England played well in patches and got themselves level soon after the restart. Perhaps we allowed them to shine a bit more.

On a disappointing night for England in Paris, captain Harry Kane was the redeeming player.

"We had an opportunity tonight once they had gone to 10 to readdress that by keeping the ball better and not forcing things".

Kane, who struck the late equaliser in a 2-2 draw with Scotland in a World Cup qualifier on Saturday, has now scored 11 goals in his past five appearances for club and country combined. Deschamps will have a full squad for the encounter but it will be intriguing to see if the skipper decides to use some of the younger players on the roster like Kylian Mbappe, Thomas Lemar, Adrien Rabiot and Ousmane Dembele.
