Still no points for McLaren, despite Alonso being in 10th place until the penultimate lap when his car's Honda engine expired. "We've understood the tyres, utilised the tyres a lot better this weekend, but I think there's still things we've understood but that you can't just fix in two weeks. I can't think of a better place to do it".
Hamilton started from the pole and ended by taking the checkered flag by 19.7 seconds over Mercedes AMG teammate Valttieri Botas.
It was the fastest qualifying lap ever at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, nearly 1.5 seconds faster than the pace that won him last year's pole and even one second better than Vettel ran in his Ferrari during Saturday morning's practice. "It was wonderful teamwork". "Obviously the beginning of the race didn't go our way, but I was still believing that we could fight back and probably get a podium. It should put us in a good position from here moving forwards".
"So in terms of where we direct the development, the guys now in the factory have a much better goal".
The Mercedes driver controlled the race from start to finish, leading home team-mate Valtteri Bottas.
The safety auto came out on the opening lap when, on the first turn, Romain Grosjean's Haas nudged Carlos Sainz's Toro Rosso, which plowed into the side of Stroll's Williams teammate Felipe Massa. A safety auto was scrambled to allow marshalls to collect the two stricken cars, while Grosjean pitted for a new front wing. Verstappen made a sensational start, scything from fifth to second into the first corner.
Republicans outwit Democrats again — Georgia Elections
But history weighs heavily in favor of big Democratic gains, and Republicans are not resting easy. In the last 20 midterm elections, the incumbent president's party has lost House seats in 18.
That gave his team something to cheer after young Dutchman Max Verstappen had his race come to a premature end with mechanical problems while running second and challenging Hamilton for the lead.
"I tried to be aggressive and get ahead of the Ferraris", said Bottas.
"I knew where he was", admitted Hamilton.
Drivers also had to deal with 29C heat and a strong wind. "Then with a few laps to go I heard Seb (Vettel) was coming".
"I'd equalled Ayrton in race wins (41) a while ago so this was the focus for me".
"I was very busy for most of the race".
Seven races in, Hamilton now trails Vettel by 12 points with both men having three wins each this season.
"It's always been a special place for me", said Hamilton.
"It is kind of insane to think I had my first pole position and grand prix win here 10 years ago", Hamilton added.
