In addition to taking home the award for Best New Artist during the 2017 BET Awards, which aired Sunday, the rapper and activist became the youngest person to receive its Humanitarian Award. Michelle Obama thanked Chance with a special video message, saying that she and the former President have known Chance since he was "a wee little baby rapper".
Chance acknowledged that the honor felt early in his young career, but said, "My God doesn't make mistakes". "I want to travel overseas and help out people all over the world", he said. When the crowd cheered at one point, he urged them on, telling them to "Please, gas me up!" The cast including Bryshere Gray and Luke James gave musical tributes to the group before coming onstage to accept their award.
Chance has been an outspoken advocate for the public school system in Chicago, and has been at the frontline of several fundraising campaigns. "For over 20 years, he and I went through it all, and seen it all", Havoc said.
The singer though was grateful to the network for giving him his first-ever award, a Soul Train honor for the collaboration he did with B.o.B "Nothin' On You". "Thank you for sticking with me".
Mars beat out Chris Brown, The Weeknd, Trey Songz and Usher for the award.
