Israeli settlement construction in West Bank rises by 70%

Trump has asked Netanyahu to hold back on settlement building as he seeks to build momentum for a new peace push.

While Israel has continued to expand settlements, this is the first time it has built a new one since the 1990s.

The Palestinians want an independent state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, with its capital in East Jerusalem, and also claim historical and political links to the land.

Mr Trump has said he considers settlement expansion as unhelpful for a peace deal.

Palestinians regard settlements, around 200 of which have been built over the past 50 years on occupied land that they seek for a state, as obstacles to a viable and contiguous country.

Israeli and USA officials provided no information on what was to be discussed and there are no plans for Kushner to speak to the media or take any questions, maintaining the circumspect profile he has established since Trump took office.

Nickolay Mladenov stressed that the United Nations considers settlement activities illegal under worldwide law.

Greenblatt, President Donald Trump's special envoy to the Middle East, arrived Sunday in Israel.

Greenblatt arrived in Israel on Monday for preparatory talks in both Jerusalem and Ramallah, and will remain for follow-up discussions after Kushner has departed, officials said. Envoy Jason Greenblatt has already made several visits.

Kushner touched down Wednesday for meetings with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

The Palestinians, meanwhile, have rejected Netanyahu's demands to recognize Israel's Jewish identity.

Two youths from the village of Deir Abu Mashal in the occupied West Bank had on Friday opened fire on a group of officers near the Old City, while a third fatally stabbed a border policewoman a short distance away. "They are a risky actor who has no care for the Palestinians, no care for the Israelis, and they are determined to destroy everything in their path", Haley said. Among the Israeli companies that have done business in Saudi Arabia are Elbit Systems Ltd., Israel's biggest non-state owned defense contractor, and IntuView Ltd., which combs through social media posts to identify potential terrorists.

Israel blames the violence on incitement by Palestinian political and religious leaders compounded on social media sites that glorify violence and encourage attacks.

Mohammed Thabet of the Gaza electricity distribution company said Gaza's roughly 2 million residents could expect to receive even less power.
