Ending guessing game, Trump admits there are no Comey tapes

23 Juin 2017

President Donald Trump signaled that he might fire the "very bothersome" special counsel, Robert Mueller, who is investigating his possible ties to Russian Federation.

Mueller was appointed to lead the investigation into Russia's meddling in the 2016 presidential election, including possible links to Trump's campaign, after the president fired Comey over his handling of the investigation. "You never know what's happening when you see that the Obama administration and perhaps longer than that was doing all this unmasking and surveillance and you read all about it and I've been reading about it for the last couple of months about the seriousness of the horribleness of the situation of surveillance all over the place".

He said Comey's "story may have changed" after he tweeted about the existence of tapes.

Trump, though, said his story didn't change and was "always a straight story".

"I have no idea whether there are "tapes" or recordings of my conversations with James Comey, but I did not make, and do not have, any such recordings", Trump wrote on Twitter. "You know, health care is a very hard situation".

The comments followed a tweet from the president Thursday, where he also denied taping Comey, ending weeks of speculation after a Twitter warning that Comey had "better hope" there were no "tapes" of their conversations.

Trump denied there has been any obstruction of justice when it comes to the Russian Federation investigation or any collusion with Moscow.

"Well he's very, very good friends with Comey, which is very bothersome", Trump said, according to the Fox transcript.

"I think the president has played the media like a fiddle for two and a half years", said Florida Sen. I can tell you that.

"Well he's very, very good friends with Comey, which is very bothersome", Trump said of Mueller.

In his testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee, Comey said Trump's tweet made him give his memos of meetings with Trump to a friend. Tell the truth. Because Robert Mueller never said - or James Comey had never said anything about the president not being under investigation until the president says there might be tapes.

Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway muddied the waters a little Friday morning when she told CNN that, while Trump "answered definitively" he has made no tapes, "he left open the possibility that they may exist".

Mueller and Comey worked together at the Justice Department in the Bush administration.

The absence of recordings nearly certainly elevates in significance to investigators the notes made by Comey at the time. White House aides have been known to grimace when the subject comes up, and more than a half-dozen staffers said they were unaware of any recording devices.
