Doctors encouraged by Rep. Steve Scalise's improving condition

23 Juin 2017

The man who shot senior Republican congressman Steve Scalise and others at a congressional baseball practice session this week had a list containing the names of three politicians, officials said.

The bullet entered his left hip and tore through his pelvis, breaking bones, injuring organs and causing severe bleeding.

Even with the progress over the last two days, though, Sava said Scalise will remain in the hospital for the near future.

Lobbyist Matt Mika was shot multiple times and remains hospitalized.

The bullet that hit him fragmented into hundreds of pieces, but Sava said there is more risk involved in trying to find and remove those fragments than benefit.

"I think that his risk of death right now is substantially lower than when he came in, and certainly whatever you think of the word critical, he was as critical as you can be when he came in", said Trauma Director Dr. Jack Sava.

Capitol Police Officer Crystal Griner also remains at the MedStar Washington hospital after sustaining a gunshot wound to her ankle, but is in "good condition and good spirits" the hospital said.

Still, Netanyahu's announcement of a new settlement on the eve of Kushner's arrival drew a sharp Palestinian rebuke. Kahlon made the statements as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with US special envoy Jason Greenblatt.

Sava said that after being released from the hospital, Scalise "will require a period of healing and rehabilitation".

Scalise will need more surgeries, some of which could take place as early as this weekend.

The president's meaning was not entirely clear, but Trump went on to say that "Because of him and the tremendous pain and suffering he's now enduring - and he's having a hard time, far worse than anybody thought - our country will perhaps become closer, more unified, so important".

"By playing tonight we are showing the world that we will not be intimidated by threats, acts of violence or assaults on our democracy", said President Donald Trump, appearing on the park's giant screen but not attending.

House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., paid a visit to his injured colleague at the hospital Friday. He's been undergoing repeat surgeries.

Trump on Thursday reiterated his call for unity in the aftermath of the shooting in the Washington suburb of Alexandria, Virginia. They say he is able to communicate through notes, and signed the game ball from Friday's congressional baseball game.

When the members of the Republican team were announced at Nationals Park, mention of Scalise's name drew a standing ovation from the areas designated for Republican, Democrat and nonpartisan fans alike.
