Freddie Freeman planning to play third base upon return from disabled list

22 Juin 2017

Braves star Freddie Freeman plans to move from first base to third base to keep Matt Adams' bat in the Atlanta lineup.

Freeman is by far the most exciting player on the Braves' roster, off to the best start of his career with a.341/.461/.748 line and 14 home runs when he went down. Freeman replied, "No. Obviously it's been a few years since I've played third base but hopefully I can take to it quickly and hopefully I can refresh my memory of doing it 10 years ago". However, he'll still have the opportunity to come back strong and put together a great second half.

Since coming to Atlanta in a trade with St. Louis on May 20, Adams has hit.296 with 10 home runs and 27 RBIs.

"I mentioned it and said I'd be willing to move over to third base to accommodate Matt, who's been pretty spectacular for us", Freeman said.

On Wednesday, the move picked up more steam as Freeman took grounders at third base before the Braves' evening game with the San Francisco Giants. ("I can't think of any, really", manager Brian Snitker said when asked to think of a successful example.) Freeman is positioned as the future of a rebuilding franchise, and rightfully so; Adams is a temporary grab acquired for the low, low cost of a non-prospect.

Bat-signal shines bright in Los Angeles for stirring Adam West tribute

Though it is not uncommon to see a player move in order to accommodate a teammate who plays the same position, finding another first baseman, let alone a star player, who has switched to third base as a complete novice has proven hard in researching this piece. "His footwork, his arm is a weapon there, his hands are good". It's also no surprise that Jones' first comment was surprise. Freeman said, "For me, obviously, it's charging". Adonis Garcia has spent the most time there, but he just went down with a finger injury expected to keep him sidelined for two months.

"He just told me it's going to be tough to do, moving to third", Freeman said. He did play five games at third base in 2007, as a 17-year-old in the Rookie Gulf Coast League.

Freeman hopes to be cleared to hit following tests on the wrist on Friday.

"My first baseman's glove is getting tucked away at the back of my locker and I've got an infielder's glove sent to me tomorrow", Freeman said.

As a result, the club is reportedly mulling a position change to third base for one of the players as a solution.
