Suspect shot after explosion at Brussels train station

Belgian troops patrolling Brussels Central Station "neutralised" a person after a small explosion on Tuesday, a police spokesman said, adding that there were no other casualties and the situation was under control.

He could not confirm media reports that the person had been wearing an explosive vest, and it was not clear whether the person shot was still alive.

The Belgian capital's Grand Place, a major tourist site, was evacuated along with the station about 200 metres (656 feet) away.

Police officials and soldiers stand alert in a cordoned off area outside Gare Centrale in Brussels.

Social media images showed an intense yet contained ball of fire in the station's underground arrival hall.

Brussels Central Station was evacuated and sealed following the incident, the Belgian rail operator said, as police and soldiers swarmed the area and other parts of central Brussels.

Prime Minister Michel and the interior minister were in the national crisis centre monitoring developments.
