"Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer be working as an actor", the statement read.

But Day-Lewis is extremely selective of his projects as it is, and, if reports are true, gave up acting for a good chunk of the late '90s/early aughts to work as a cobbler. He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years. "This is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will make any further comment on this subject", his rep Leslee Dart tells PEOPLE.

This is a developing story...

Daniel Day-Lewis attends Arthur Miller - One Night 100 Years Benefit at Lyceum Theatre on January 25, 2016 in New York City. Day-Lewis is famous for ducking the spotlight and taking years between roles to either prepare for his performances or pursue interests off the screen (shoemaking among them).

The celebrated method actor has played writers, presidents and gang leaders over the course of his four-decade career.

Daniel Day Lewis won the Best actor Oscar for his role in Steven Spielberg's historical bio-pic. He also was nominated for Gangs of NY (2002) and In the Name of the Father (1993).

The Academy Award victor has one film awaiting release, the upcoming drama Phantom Thread. The film is set in 1950s London and stars Day-Lewis as a fashion designer who caters to high society.

He hasn't appeared in a film since he portrayed Abraham Lincoln in that biopic five years ago, and his final movie - the drama "Phantom Thread" - premieres this December. The project has already completed shooting and is now scheduled for release December 25.

Fans have taken to Twitter to express their disappointment at the news.
