Twitch secures Blizzard streaming rights

20 Juin 2017

As part of this month's Loot for Twitch Prime members, the streaming giant gave out a "Golden Loot box" for Overwatch, which guarantees at least one legendary item.

Blizzard games are among the most viewed on Twitch. Similar freebies for Hearthstone and Heroes of the Storm are "coming soon". You must have a Twitch Prime subscription to get the loot, but once you've claimed it, it's yours to keep even if you drop your Prime subscription.

"We founded Twitch as a gaming platform heavily based on our community's reaction to games like Blizzard's StarCraft II", said Kevin Lin, chief operating officer of Twitch, in a press release sent to GamesBeat.

The Twitch Prime special also includes Twitch-branded cosmetics for PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds and exclusives for National Basketball Association 2K17. "We know there are millions of people out there who love Blizzard eSports as much as we do, and we're committed to making sure they'll be able to cheer on their favourite players in all of their favouritism Blizzard games for a long time to come". The codes expire in three months, and while the site doesn't specify for how long the deal will last, it might be unwise to expect it to stay forever. For more information visit www.twitchprime.com. Twitch Prime offers ad-free viewing and game content promotions like this. Twitch also runs TwitchCon, the annual convention for celebrating the Twitch community.

Not only will Twitch be the go-to third party broadcaster for popular tournaments like Overwatch APEX, the StarCraft II World Championship Series, and the Hearthstone Championship Tour, it will also be gifting Blizzard-related goodies to Twitch Prime subscribers.

Some exceptions apply with regard to certain regions and languages, and digital platforms associated with linear-media rights holders.

If you're paying for Twitch Prime, you're going to be getting free stuff in Blizzard's biggest games thanks to a new deal between the two companies.
