Warmbier returned from North Korea last week in a coma, and his father Fred Warmbier denounced the "pariah" regime that brutalized his son.
Authorities in Kim Jong-Un's North said he had fallen ill with food poisoning and taken a sleeping tablet - which doctors in the U.S. find no evidence of. "Unfortunately, the terrible torturous mistreatment our son received at the hands of the North Koreans ensured that no other outcome was possible beyond the sad one we experienced today", they said. "Surrounded by his loving family, Otto died today at 2:20 p.m".
"It would be easy at a moment like this to focus on all that we lost - future time that won't be spent with a warm, engaging, brilliant young man whose curiosity and enthusiasm for life knew no bounds", the family said. President Trump offered condolences to the Warmbier family in a statement, saying that "Otto's fate deepens my Administration's determination to prevent such tragedies from befalling innocent people at the hands of regimes that do not respect the rule of law or basic human decency".
His parents said they were only informed of his condition a week ago.

Japan's chief cabinet secretary Yoshihide Suga reassured the public that both Japan and the United States were committed to maintaining regional deference in the face of the North Korean threat, despite the naval incident on Saturday.
