MLB Draft: Twins take shortstop at No

20 Juin 2017

Meanwhile, the Yankees grabbed pitching in the first round of the 2017 MLB Draft, taking Clarke Schmidt, a 21-year-old righty out of the University of SC, with the No. 16 overall selection.

SC starting pitcher Clarke Schmidt had Tommy John surgery on his throwing arm in May.

The Minnesota Twins pulled a draft-day surprise by selecting prep shortstop Royce Lewis with the No. 1 overall pick.

I'll continue to write-up individual profiles of draftees for at least the first couple draftees today, but for the later picks on whom there's less information at some point it'll be a summary page depending on exactly how things develop.

On Monday, the 53rd annual First-Year Player Draft took place at the MLB Network studios in Secaucus, NJ with clubs seeking a similar result from a potential franchise cornerstone.

The Minnesota Twins selected California high school shortstop Royce Lewis with the No. 1 pick in the Major League Baseball draft Monday night.

"We know he's going to be a leader the second he steps on the field".

Greene was next to come off the board - and until he did, many wondered where he would fit as a pro. The guy I would pick is Hunter Greene, a righthanded pitcher from Notre Dame High in Sherman Oaks, Los Angeles, who throws a 102-MPH fastball. Greene, featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated this season, also batted.324 with six homers and 28 RBIs.

"Cody would have taken him 1/1 I think", Marlins vice president of scouting Stan Meek said.

"I feel like I haven't even grown into any of my man strength yet", he said.

University of Virginia juniors went back to back, as the Arizona Diamondbacks selected first baseman Pavin Smith at No. 7 and the Philadelphia Phillies picked center fielder Adam Haseley at No. 8.

Katy Perry tops Billboard 200 chart with her latest album Witness
In one interview, Perry said she was ready to bury the hatchet on her long-running feud with Swift. "I don't think feud songs are a hot thing-there's always been beef songs", He added regarding the recent trend of songs attacking other artistes.

Because Greene has not pitched since early April, the Reds will use him in the field until he eases back into pitching shape, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer's John Fay.

"Oh, yeah, that'd be unbelievable", Greene said.

"We see this guy as an impact player on both sides of the ball", Radcliff said. "So I think they're pretty pumped up for that, so we'll see how it works out".

Then it was McKay, another two-way star from Louisville, going fourth to the Rays as a first baseman.

At the plate, his fluid left-handed swing resulted in 27 career homers (17 this year) in 649 at-bats. He's also 10-3 with 2.34 ERA and 140 strikeouts and just 33 walks in 104 innings on the mound. "He loves him. He says he's a great kid, a hard worker and the kind of person we want in our system".

After he was selected, Greene said on the MLB Network, "The Reds are awesome, I'm excited". "It's going to be fun to be involved, and being on the field a lot".

The slot value at No. 35 is $1.94 million, while the 37th pick comes with a suggested price tag of $1.85 million. They took Joe Mauer in 2001 the only other time they held the No. 1 pick.

Lewis is a pure hitter, playing both shortstop and outfield in high school.

The 6-foot-1, 185-pounder out of JSerra Catholic nabbed bids to the Under Armour All-American Game and Perfect Game All-American Classic, and responded by taking home MVP in both showcases.

The Twins are sitting on top of the American League Central standings this year with a 32-27 record.

The Twins, however, passed on Greene, allowing the Reds to strike.
