Mumbai serial blasts case verdict out: Abu Salem, Mustafa Dossa found guilty

19 Juin 2017

One of the main conspirators, Abu Salem is guilty of procuring and supplying the arms and ammunition including AK-47 assault rifles, bullets and hand grenades, from Gujarat to Mumbai in early 1993. "The role of Taher Merchant, with this kind of indulgence in the conspiracy, must be held directly responsible for the explosions", the verdict said.

According to the prosecution, Mustafa Dossa, Tiger Memon and Chhota Shakeel organised training camps in Pakistan and in India to impart and undergo weapon and arms training and handling of explosives.

FEB 2007 Main trial concludes. The 13 locations are Mumbai Stock Exchange building, Masjid-Mandvi Corporation Bank Branch, Zaveri Bazaar, Fisherman's Colony in Mahim Causeway, Plaza Cinema, Katha Bazaar, Century Bazaar, Hotel Sea Rock, Air India building, Terminal at Sahar Airport (current CSIA), Hotel Juhu Centaur, Worli and Passport Office.

Sanjay Dutt and many others surrendered before the TADA court here in May 2013 after SC upheld their conviction.

The Mumbai serial blasts had left 257 people dead, 713 others seriously injured, and destroyed properties worth an estimated Rs 27 crore.

While the CBI sought that each of the men be charged under Section 121 of IPC for waging a war against the country, the court ruled that "it can not be accepted" and held all the men not guilty under the charge.

On a large scale, the RDX (Research Department Explosive i.e cyclotrimethylene trinitramine) was used for the blasts, which was stated as the first-ever terrorist attack in the world. Abdul Qayyum was acquitted.

In what is said to be the most coordinated terrorist attack to have taken place in India, the blasts occurred in some of the most crowded junctions in the city.

When Dawood Ibrahim and company fled Mumbai after executing the serial blasts, it was Abu Salem who sat at the helm of the organisation and called the shots.

Karimullah Khan has been held guilty of smuggling the explosives into the country through the Shekhadi Port in Raigad, while Siddiqui and Feroze Khan are guilty of transporting the explosives to the targeted sites.

Salem delivered the arms and ammunition at various places, including the house of Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt.

The trial of the seven accused was taken up separately after the TADA court in 2007 convicted 100 persons and acquitted 23. The blast was a "revenge" for the demolition and the subsequent riots planned by the accused under the leadership of Dawood Ibrahim and Ibrahim Mushtaq Abdul Razak Memon (Tiger Memon), reports the Indian Express. His repeated petitions in the court seeking review of the decisions was dismissed by Supreme Court. He was also arrested in a case of a murder of a businessman in Vikaspuri. The charges were later brought in, but the CBI dropped them after Salem approached the Supreme Court in 2013. Yakub Memon, in a controversial judgement, was sentenced to death and hanged on July 30, 2015 in Nagpur jail.
