Vice President Mike Pence said he visited on Thursday morning the Washington hospital where Steve Scalise, the No. 3 Republican in the U.S. House of Representatives, was being treated for injuries to internal organs, broken bones and severe bleeding after being shot in the left hip.
Votes are scheduled and the charity baseball game will go on tonight as scheduled.
The lawmakers took the field with many wearing hats to honor Scalise.
"By playing tonight, you are showing the world that we will not be intimidated by threats, acts of violence, or assaults on our democracy", Trump said. "Additionally, we want to thank the Capitol Police for their heroic actions to stop the shooter before he could hurt even more people".
Many lawmakers in both parties, as well as the President, called for unity after the shooting.

Trump, in Miami this afternoon delivering remarks on Cuba policy changes, said of Scalise, "Because of him and the tremendous pain and suffering he's now enduring - he's having a hard time, far worse than anybody thought - our country will perhaps become closer, more unified".
