Napoli hits 2 of Rangers' 4 homers in win over Mariners

18 Juin 2017

The weather was scorching Saturday, although 35,928 hearty fans braved the elements anyway at Globe Life Park. But only for a few moments.

Another day, another 10-4 loss on the road to Texas.

Another one. The Rangers also won 10-4 in Friday's series opener. Jonathan Lucroy and Adrian Beltre each had two hits and two RBIs.

Paxton (5-2) gave up seven runs, seven hits and three walks while striking out four in 3 2/3 innings.

"He couldn't finish the inning", manager Scott Servais said.

"He got some balls up, and you just can't do that with them", Servais said.

Pitching coach Mel Stottlemyer came out but it did no good, as Mike Napoli smacked a 1-1 hanging slider for his 12th homer of the season, a two-run shot.

Altavilla served up three home runs up in the strike zone.

"I hit it well", Zunino said. "It was going right into their swing". Pitching's ERA of 4.24 places them 15th in the league.

The M's will try to snap their three-game skid when they face the Rangers in the series finale at noon PT Sunday. If his poor showing down there helped him work out the kinks, the Rangers will certainly take it.

"Honestly, I didn't think it was going to go out", Gallardo said.

So what has been the issue in his last two starts, where he's given up a combined 11 runs in 72/3 innings?

"It's frustrating", Gallardo said. You guys know it's always that one inning.

London police: 58 still missing, presumed dead from Grenfell Tower fire
London's mayor Sadiq Khan was heckled by an angry crowd demanding answers, and there are fears that tensions could escalate. The prime minister has been heavily criticised for appearing to show a lack of empathy in the wake of the disaster.

The Mariners got one run back in the third inning on back-to-back doubles by Guillermo Heredia and Taylor Motter.

Martin Perez steps on the mound for Game 2. But in the bottom half of the frame, Zac Curtis served up a three-run homer to Carlos Gomez, who ambushed a first-pitch change-up. On the eighth pitch of the at-bat, Zunino crushed a changeup into deep center field for a three-run home run. "Everything leading up to today was a reason for everything I did. I had a feeling at 3-2, he might throw it". He left with a 5-4 lead.

Odor hit a leadoff homer in the sixth off Dan Altavilla. Altavilla hit Carlos Gomez with a pitch and left a 96 miles per hour fastball up to Napoli, who crushed it to deep left for his second homer of the game. He walked Delino DeShields and Shin-Soo Choo back-to-back.

"To Odor, we were trying to go up and in", Altavilla said, "and it just kind of ran back over the middle". But I'm in the process of trying to figure out how to fix it. "That was a common theme".

The Rangers led 10-4, which is how it ended. Gallardo stranded Andrus at second base.

DIAMONDBACKS 5, PHILLIES 4: Gregor Blanco hit a tying two-run homer and Jake Lamb drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning to rally Arizona at Philadelphia.

MINUS: Gallardo's 6.30 ERA ranks as the third highest in the majors among qualifying pitchers.

The gangs all here and it's getting fun again at Globe Life Park. Dan Wilson held the club record with 21 in April 1996.

QUOTABLE: Zunino is batting.325 (25-for-77) with seven homers and 24 RBIs in 22 games since his May 22 recall from Triple-A Tacoma.

"Really, I'm not trying to pull the ball", he said.

NOTES: The Rangers made several roster moves before the game, starting with designating RHP Dillon Gee for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster for Ross.

Can the Mariners cool a Rangers team that has played well over its last 10 games?

The game can be seen on Root Sports Northwest and heard on 710 ESPN and the Mariners Radio Network.
