While announcing the launch of the new POPSKs, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj also talked about the government's ambitious plan to open a passport center every 50 km across the country.

Therefore, we collaborated with Manoj Sinha, Minister for Communications, to establish Post Office Passport Seva Kendras (POPSKs) and now at the end of three years, we announce 83 POPSKs, out of which 52 have become operational in the first phase.

In February this year, the MEA and the Department of Posts (DOP) had announced to utilise the Head Post Offices (HPO) in various states as POPSK for delivering passport related services to the people. On an average, these offices handle 3,500 appointments per week. He said that since coming to power in May 2014, the NDA government had put together a total of 251 passport service centres and POPSKs.

Prior to this, there were only 77 PSKs in the country.

Qatar has remained an important member of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) but it refused to take sides against Iran . Sisi said boycotting Turkey would sustain pressure on Qatar, pressuring Doha to give in to the demands of the Gulf.

"We planned to set a target and decided that no individual should have to travel more than 50 km for a passport". She said that in the third phase more POPSK would be opened.

Sushma Swaraj also launched a web portal for the ministry's flagship "Know India Programme" aimed at connecting the Indian youth living overseas with Indian culture and heritage.

In 2016, the scheme was revamped to increase its duration from 21 to 25 days, with a 10-day visit to one or two states and preference given to PIOs from Girmitiya countries.

Vani Roa, joint-secretary (Overseas Indian Affairs) said through the portal, the interested participants can directly apply for the programme. Since the labourers were illiterate, the word "Agreement' was pronounced by them as "Girmit".
