Anger over not guilty verdict in Minnesota police shooting

18 Juin 2017

Reynolds, who filmed the aftermath of Castile's shooting, said she was "incredibly disappointed" by the verdict.

Castile's death was captured via a Facebook livestream launched by his girlfriend seconds after he was shot by the police officer.

Minnesota State Patrol arrested 18 people protesting after a jury found Officer Jeronimo Yanez not guilty for the shooting of Philando Castile, according to one of the patrol's Twitter accounts. They spent a lot of time dissecting the "culpable negligence" requirement for conviction, and the last two holdouts agreed Friday on acquittal.

March 3: Castile's girlfriend is charged with felony assault for allegedly hitting a woman in the head with a hammer.

Yanez told Castile, "OK, don't reach for it then" and "Don't pull it out".

Castile, however, had no criminal record. "That man worked hard for me every single day". Had he been convicted, Yanez would have faced 10 years in prison. Unlawful assembly and other charges are pending against them, it said.

Castile had a permit for the weapon, and prosecutors questioned whether Yanez ever saw the gun.

"I was scared to death".

"I didn't want to shoot Mr. Castile", Yanez testified. In it, Castile can be seen bleeding to death in the driver's seat. "I know that if he could, he would take back what he did, and we all wish, and he would too, that this never happened". "Nowhere in the world do you die from being honest and telling the truth". Defense attorneys pointed to inconsistencies in several of her statements.

Prosecutors said Yanez was not justified in firing his gun, saying that Castile was courteous and non-threatening. Reynolds' 4-year-old daughter was also in the vehicle at the time of the incident. Court officers hustled Yanez and the jurors out of the room. No video existed of exactly what happened inside the vehicle.

University of Minnesota student Aurin Chowdhury said she was disgusted by the verdict, but not surprised.

Kauser also testified that he trusted Yanez as a partner.

Castile's mother, Valerie Castile, emerged as a calm voice for change after her son's death.

Minneapolis mayoral candidate Nekima Levy-Pounds said at the State Capitol rally, "We have a right to be sick and exhausted of being sick and exhausted ..." He was faced two lesser counts of endangering Reynolds and her daughter for opening fire into the vehicle. She declined to comment to reporters during the course of the trial.

The evidence included squad auto video, but its wide view didn't capture exactly what happened inside the vehicle.

In March 2016, a Hennepin County prosecutor did not file criminal charges against two Minneapolis police officers involved in the shooting death of Jamar Clark in November 2015.

In the incident last July, Yanez, 29, stopped Castile, 32, and asked him to produce his licence. His girlfriend argued that he was reaching for his wallet. Attorneys and the Ramsey Cohen attorney's office that were handling this case.

During the trial, the three took turns cross-examining the state's witnesses and presenting arguments to the jury. He denied their request.

If testimony from one figure is re-read, it's nearly like they're testifying again, said Marsh Halberg, a defense attorney not connected to the case. The jury also found him not guilty of two counts of reckless discharge of a firearm, which carried a maximum five-year sentence. The rest were white.
