In 2013, Boston acquired the No. 1 pick through the Nets' disastrous draft-night deal that landed aging stars Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Jason Terry in Brooklyn for a package that included three unprotected first-round picks in 2014, 2016 and 2018 plus the right to swap picks this year.
There is no other way to look at this deal - one that sees the Celtics also acquire a protected 2018 first-round pick from the Los Angeles Lakers or a 2019 first-round pick from the Sacramento Kings, depending on whether the protection criteria is met.
But Adrian Wojnarowski's report Saturday night, confirming speculation for over a day that the Sixers had struck a deal with the Celtics for the first overall pick seems like a kind of satisfaction - relatively speaking - for long suffering Philly fans.
Multiple outlets reported the deal will happen and once it becomes official, the 76ers intend to use the pick on Fultz at Thursday's draft at Barclays Center. His visit was expected to be one of the final hurdles to clear before Boston and Philadelphia could decide to actually consummate the trade. In a league that thrives on versatility and perimeter-oriented play, the Sixers will now have the pieces needed to compete at the highest of levels down the road.
"Embiid, he and I have been talking before when I was in college", Fultz said.
In his only season with Washington, Fultz averaged 23.2 points and 5.9 assists.
"They're big on defense, so I think the tools I have to be a defensive player will help them get out in transition", Fultz said.
Time Running Out To Reach Northern Power Sharing Agreement
The dispute has prompted renewed calls for a chairman from outside the United Kingdom and Ireland to be appointed. However, a major question mark now hangs over the talks as a result of developments at Westminster.
"I come to Philly a lot", he said. "It just shows how much hard work I out in and how dedicated I am to do what I do".
If the Celtics do move the top pick to Philadelphia, the 76ers would have a loaded young core with Fultz (assuming they pick him), Joel Embiid, Ben Simmons and Dario Saric.
Though the Celtics value Fultz' overall potential as a lead scorer who can fit in with Thomas better than all the other backcourt talent in this point guard-heavy draft. If Boston indeed wants to take Josh Jackson at the No.3 spot, you have to wonder if a spurned Lakers team would take Jackson over Lonzo Ball with their No.2 overall pick.
When Fultz was asked how his last few days have gone, with all of the late trade rumors and speculation concerning where he might end up, he answered honestly about the two-day process (no pun intended). I wake up every morning and get ready to go to the gym.
Philadelphia went 28-54 this past season, after winning 19, 18 and 10 games in the previous three.
Last season's improved win total came with Okafor (50), Embiid (31) and Simmons (0) combining for 81 appearances, as Philadelphia's trend of being absolutely snakebit by injuries continued.
Fultz, who already is learning the correlation between the National Basketball Association and lightning-fast change, has gone from saying how wonderful it would be to wear Celtics' green, to ready to put on a Sixers uniform.
