Jay Z Plans on Bailing Out Incarcerated Dads for Father's Day

17 Juin 2017

On the heels of his production of the docuseries Time: The Kalief Browder Story, Jay Z is taking charge against the "exploitative" bail bond industry. Last year, Jay produced a six-part documentary series on Browder's ordeal and its applications to the justice system as a whole, an experience which led him to discover just how punitive the bail-bond industry can be.

Jay Z reminisced on his own history and how he relates to people impacted by the bail bond situation.

"This Father's Day, I'm supporting those same organizations to bail out fathers who can't afford the due process our democracy promises", he wrote.

In his piece, Jay continues, "When black and brown people are over-policed and arrested and accused of crimes at higher rates than others, and then forced to pay for their freedom before they ever see trial, big bail companies prosper". "Families are forced to take on more debt, often in predatory lending schemes created by bail bond insurers".

Mueller Hires 13 Lawyers to Expand Russia Probe
The decision sits with Mueller about whether enough evidence exists to call for charges in any part of the probe, CNN reported. Records show the trio spent at least $53,000 supporting Democratic candidates since 1998.

His other television project for National Geographic, called Race with Jay Z, will take a look at race in America during the 2016 presidential election. "Or their loved ones linger in jails, sometimes for months".

In the essay, Jay takes aim at the criminal justice system. Every year $9 billion are wasted incarcerating people who've not been convicted of a crime, and insurance companies, who have taken over our bail system, go to the bank.

Citing inspiration from fundraisers run by organizations like Southerners on New Ground and Color of Change - which bailed out 100 mothers on Mother's Day - he says he's now giving financial support to help bail out fathers. Is It a New Jay Z album?

"As a father with a growing family, it's the least I can do, but philanthropy is not a long fix, we have to get rid of these inhuman practices altogether", he adds. Our prophets come in many different shapes, forms, or mediums. "I would hope that any human being, that that's the right thing to do".
