Warriors, Durant storm to finals win

15 Juin 2017

Capturing a second title in three seasons in historic fashion has put the Golden State Warriors among some of the NBA's greatest championship squads, overcoming a heartbreaking setback to become even better.

The Golden State Warriors finally found redemption in the form of an NBA Finals trophy last night, after their 73-win season previous year was ruined by a 3-1 Finals comeback by the Lebron James-led Cleveland Cavaliers. A fabulous first one with and for Durant.

Durant looked like he might get his third early in the second when he hit James on the head as the Cavs leader drove for two but the call never came and Durant avoided what would have been a seat on the bench for the remainder of the half.

Golden State completed an unprecedented 16-1 run through the National Basketball Association playoffs, registering the second-best average playoff point differential (plus-13.5) in league history. Whenever he is asked about his own accomplishments, he is always quick to offer a reminder just as he did with a new National Basketball Association champions hat on his head: "It's a team sport".

Following the victory Monday night, spontaneous celebrations broke out in streets around Oakland.

"We left everything on the floor, and it still wasn't enough".

"Experience is the best teacher in life, and he's just experiencing and experiencing", he said.

"And that last three minutes was a blur just of pure emotion and energy".

Kerr still found time to crack a joke on the stage afterward: "Well, we had very little talent, actually, it was mostly coaching".

"We're obviously just getting started", Curry said. "This is something that we want to continue to do, but for us to have these conversations that we had nearly a year ago and now being in this position, worth every shot we took in practice, fighting through injuries that he had this year, and it's an unbelievable feeling".

Beating Cleveland two out of three in the first rivalry to be featured in three consecutive finals didn't hurt the sense of drama the Warriors aroused all season.

"This is history", Warriors forward Andre Iguodala said. The New England Patriots posed with Trump after winning this year's Super Bowl (though more than a handful of players did not make an appearance).

"You learn from your mistakes", Green said. "I feel like we've grown from that". Instead, he talked to reporters about how he was feeling about losing to the Warriors just one year after beating them in the Finals. Curry is an unrestricted free agent for the first time in his career.

Later, he was straightforward and serious: "We were heartbroken last year, but this year was our turn".

James, who in 2012 with Miami beat the Thunder in Durant's only other Finals, wound up with 41 points, 13 rebounds and eight assists.
