The last time a lawmaker was shot was when Democratic Rep.

Carrying two large bouquets of white flowers, President Donald Trump and his wife, Melania, visited Scalise amid a somber mood at the MedStar Washington Hospital Center in Washington.

The gunman opened fire, injuring five, including House Majority Whip Steve Scalise.

"He's a patriot. And he's a fighter", Trump said.

Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., also responded on social media: "Prayers for Rep. Scalise, aides, law enforcement, and all those who were hurt", she tweeted.

Shortly afterward, Brooks said, he heard "loud explosions and I look up and there is a guy with a gun about 5 feet above me, shooting - and at first you don't know if that's a second shooter, but it turned out to be one of our guys". He immediately underwent surgery, and needed another procedure just to stop the bleeding. He has received multiple units of blood transfusion.

Scalise was earlier reported to be in critical condition after he and four other people were shot during practice for an annual charity baseball game.

Taking cover behind home plate, US Representative Mo Brooks saw a rifle pointing from a chain link fence behind the third base dugout.

"It was a regular neighborhood baseball field, probably just a mile and a half from the apartment I'd use when we were in session", Sununu said.

Also, he's not 100% sure that Russian Federation messed with the election, because he's only read news reports about it. But that changed Tuesday, with a variety of Republicans coming to Sessions' (and the White House's) aide.

Capitol Police officers who were in Scalise's security detail wounded the shooter, who was taken into custody.

Witnesses said Scalise had been standing at second base when he was shot.

He was lying motionless and was "coherent the whole time" when Sen. A spokesman with the FBI said it is too early in the investigation to say if this was an act of terrorism or whether members of Congress were being directly targeted in the shooting.

Multiple outlets identify the deceased gunman as 66-year-old James Hodgkinson of IL.

Hodgkinson's Facebook page is largely political. His picture is a caricature of Bernie Sanders as Uncle Sam and his feed is filled with anti-Trump sentiments.

Doyle put his hand on Barton's shoulder several times as the Republican, who was at the practice with his son, recalled the horror of realizing that friends and co-workers were under attack.

Shortly after the shooting, Bernie Sanders, the former candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination, said on the Senate floor that the shooter apparently was a volunteer for his campaign previous year. "And that's when I ran out to Steve and applied pressure on the wound", Flake said. "Real change can only come about through nonviolent action, and anything else runs against our most deeply held American values". Scalise was among those injured and was first believed to be in stable condition. For now, his condition remains critical.

"Our courageous Capitol Police perform a challenging job with incredible skill and their sacrifice makes democracy possible".

Lawmakers have praised the mandatory protection for party leadership saying the incident could have gone much worse had Majority Whip Steve Scalise not been present with Capitol Police Officers.
