Senior journalist says blockade against Qatar will fail

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif assured the Saudi monarch that the public and government of Pakistan were committed to protect Harmain Shareefain. Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt and Bahrain last week took measures to isolate Qatar over its support for Islamist and terrorist groups.

Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates severed diplomatic ties with Qatar, the host of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, and cut off land, sea and air routes to the tiny peninsular nation that relies on food imports.

Khanfar said all the boycotting measures were taken at once.

Twitter users from Saudi Arabia initiated a boycott campaign on Turkish goods.

The US, which is a security provider and main actor in Qatar, gave mixed signals.

Both Qatar and Saudi Arabia are major United States allies, and have close ties to European powers.

Qatar Airways will now use the aircraft that had been operated on those 18 destinations to fast track its expansion plans, al-Baker said.

Qatar Airways has made Doha a global hub in just a few years, but industry analysts say banning it from Gulf states' airspace could threaten its position as a major transcontinental carrier.

Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI) on Monday called upon the government to play mediatory role in ending the current standoff between Qatar and Gulf states.

Saudi Arabia and Iran have clashed over several issues, including Iran's nuclear program and what Saudis see as Tehran's growing influence in the region - especially in Syria, Lebanon and neighboring Yemen.

Qatar has repeatedly denied the allegations, suggesting the decision to cut diplomatic ties was pre-meditated and based on "fabricated lies".
