Sanders says congressional shooter volunteered for his campaign

Federal authorities are tracing the origins of a rifle and handgun carried by James Hodgkinson, the IL man who opened fire at a Virginia park Wednesday morning (June 14), injuring Congressman Steve Scalise and four others.

James Hodgkinson, 66, of Bellevile, Illinois was identified as the suspect in a shooting Wednesday morning.

Rep. Steve Scalise, was among those shot in Alexandria, Virginia.

Acquaintances described him as stubborn and opinionated, but they were also shocked to hear Wednesday's news.

That's when he learned that his friend, Steve Scalise, a representative from Louisiana who is the House Majority Whip, had, in fact, been shot while playing ball. He died in the hospital from wounds sustained in a shootout with police.

The Capitol Police officers who were injured are "in good condition and have not suffered any life-threatening injuries at this point", Capitol Police Chief Matthew Verderosa said at the news conference. The chief said the officers "acted heroically" once gunfire rang out.

Hodgkinson's neighbor said he had a Bernie Sanders sign in his yard during the election but never talked politics with him. "Trump Has Destroyed Our Democracy".

Politicians called for a new dialogue on lowering the partisan temperature and Mr Trump urged Americans to come together as he assumed the role of national unifier for one of the first times in his presidency. Hean and his wife hosted a number of volunteers for the Vermont senator's campaign, but he said Hodgkinson never stayed with them.

According to The Washington Post, Charles Orear, 50, a restaurant manager from St. Louis, said that he became friendly with Hodgkinson during their work together in Iowa on Sanders's presidential campaign.

"I am sickened by this despicable act", said Sanders, an independent. He is a member of Facebook groups including "Liberal Democratic Socialist Party", "I Hate Donald Trump", and "Terminate The Republican Party".

Sanders said the suspect had "apparently volunteered" on his campaign. "This is not what we're doing", he said.
