Sanders: GOP Baseball Shooter Worked on His Campaign

The gunman who shot a top GOP congressman and several other people Wednesday at a baseball practice outside the nation's capital had a long history of lashing out at Republicans and recently frightened a neighbor by firing a rifle into a field behind his IL home.

U.S. President Donald Trump said the gunman has been identified by multiple law enforcement officials as James T. Hodgkinson III, 66, from IL was killed in a shootout with police.

Police previously arrested Hodgkinson in St. Clair County on charges that include failing to obtain electrical permits, damaging a motor vehicle, resisting a peace officer, eluding police, criminal damage to property, driving under the influence and assorted traffic offenses.

In 2006, he was arrested for domestic battery and discharge of a firearm after he punched a man's girlfriend "in the face with a closed fist", according to a police report reviewed by The Daily Beast.

Though there are no other legal problems listed in St. Clair County, which includes Belleville, since 2011, Hodgkinson did come to the attention of local law enforcement as recently as March 24 of past year.

The first page, listed as belonging to a James T. Hodgkinson from Belleville, Illinois, who worked at home inspecting company JTH Inspections, features Sanders prominently.

Hodgkinson volunteered for the 2016 Bernie Sanders presidential campaign and frequently made provocative comments on his posts.

"Violence of any kind is unacceptable in our society, and I condemn this action in the strongest possible terms", Sanders said. He also reportedly volunteered for Bernie Sanders's presidential campaign in Iowa previous year.

President, for being an a** hole you are truly the biggest a** hole we have ever had in the Oval Office ", he wrote . In a March 22 Facebook post , Hodgkinson, who turned his ire against Trump, who he described as a "traitor".

Hodgkinson brother told the New York Times that the shooting happened "totally out of the blue", though he also added that they weren't particularly close.

Hodgkinson's Facebook page says he is the former owner of JTH Construction and JTH Inspections.

Among them was House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La), who was shot in the hip. He called President Donald Trump a traitor, and blasted the Republican party as being racist and sexist. That woman's boyfriend told authorities that when he went to Hodgkinson's home to confront him, Hodgkinson aimed a shotgun in his face, hit him over the head with the stock and fired a round in his direction.

The "Terminate the Republican Party" public Facebook group was among many anti-GOP groups Hodgkinson reportedly belonged to.

Representative Ron De Santis said that a man matching Hodgkinson's description approached him prior to the shooting and asked "whether it was Republicans or Democrats out there". "That's the way I got", he said. Bernie Sanders, was shot and mortally wounded by police before being taken into custody.

"I found him disturbing", Li said.

Capitol Police said the two injured officers suffered no "life-threatening injuries at this point".
