Sanders: GOP Baseball Shooter Was Campaign Volunteer

15 Juin 2017

Senator Bernie Sanders (I) says Hodgskinson was a former campaign volunteer.

"I am sickened by this despicable act", Sanders wrote.

The gunman who opened fire Wednesday morning at a us congressional baseball practice field has been identified as James T. Hodgkinson, a white male in his 60s.

Hodgkinson, 66, was shot and killed on Wednesday after he opened fire on Republican congressmen, staffers and others at a morning baseball practice in Alexandria, Va.

Scalise, the third ranking member of House Republican leadership as the majority whip, appeared to have been shot in the hip and it appeared two Capitol Hill police agents were shot, Rep. Mo Brooks said.

He says that "violence of any kind is unacceptable in our society and I condemn this action in the strongest possible terms". "Our thoughts and prayers are with the members of Congress, their staffs, Capitol Police, first responders and all others affected".

'Many lives would have been lost, if not for the heroic actions of the two Capitol police officers who took down the gunman despite sustaining gunshot wounds during a very, very brutal assault'. Sixty-five year old Dale Walsh of Belleville said "he was the type of person that if you challenged him, he wouldn't back off".

Owen Smith tipped to be invited into Jeremy Corbyn's shadow cabinet
Jeremy Corbyn today appointed Owen Smith to his shadow cabinet a year after Welsh the MP ran against him as Labour leader. Smith resigned as shadow work and pensions secretary in the wake of the European Union referendum last June.

A search of online newspapers show that Hodgkinson frequently wrote letters to his local newspaper, the Belleville News-Democrat, which published almost two dozen letters between 2010 and 2012, many of which included complaints about the same theme: income inequality.

Hean said Hodgkinson came off as extreme. The profile contains a "cover photo" depicting Bernie Sanders, for whom Hodgkinson campaigned, and his profile picture is an image that says "Democratic Socialism Explained in Three Words: We the People". The charges were later dismissed.

In March, he endorsed a petition from left-leaning activist group Change.Org branding Trump a "traitor" who "has destroyed our democracy". When a neighbor showed up to complain, Hodgkinson menaced him with a shotgun and apparently fired a shot, the lawyer said.

Scalise's office said earlier Wednesday that he was in stable condition following the shooting, although MedStar Washington Hospital Center said Wednesday afternoon that Scalise remained in critical condition.

"Immediately, Jeff and I looked at each other and said, "We've got to report this individual".

In 2006, he was charged with battery and aiding damage to a motor vehicle, though those charges were later dropped.
