Hodgkinson was spotted regularly over the past several weeks at the YMCA next to the site of the shooting, sitting with a computer in the lobby or at a table in an exercise area that looked out onto the baseball field.

After James T. Hodgkinson allegedly opened fire on a congressional baseball practice in Virginia on Wednesday, authorities are searching for information to help them understand his motivations.

President Donald Trump later confirmed that the suspect died from injuries suffered in a gunfire exchange with Rep. Scalise's security detail, which lasted almost 10 minutes. Officer BaileyCapitol Police Officer David Bailey received a minor injury but was not shot, according to U.S. Capitol Police Chief Matthew Verderosa.

"Everyone on that field is a public servant", Trump said, his tone somber, America's acrimonious politics set aside for the moment. He says they shared some friends, but weren't close.

"We are Republicans, we are Democrats, we have different ideas, we have different beliefs, but we are all trying to work for the betterment", Bost said.

"You know, it shouldn't take an incident like this to bring us together", Doyle said.

The House canceled all votes for the day. And he served as a presidential campaign volunteer for Bernie Sanders, who took to the Senate floor to condemn his act of violence. Sanders said he denounced the violence "in the strongest possible terms".

He shot the third-highest-ranking House Republican, whip Steve Scalise, and injured four others at the field just outside of Washington about 7am on Wednesday (9pm AEST). A former congressional aide was hospitalized.

Meanwhile, Yellen dodged questions about whether she would stay on for another term if President Donald Trump asks her to stay. Inflation did rise a bit earlier this year and managed to hit the Fed's goal of 2 percent a year but has since fallen back.

Republican lawmakers were practicing for the annual congressional baseball game.

Federal Bureau of Investigation special agent in charge Tim Slater said it was "too early to say" whether it was an act of terrorism, or whether Scalise was targeted.

A Facebook page believed to belong to Hodgkinson includes pictures of 2016 Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders and rants against Trump and Republicans.

Dale Walsh grew up with Hodgkinson, and knew him as Thomas. The GOP team had gathered for practice at 7 a.m. and was taking batting practice when gunshots first rang out.

Rep. Mo Brooks, an Alabama Republican, said his colleague "crawled into the outfield, leaving a trail of blood". "And I said 'There's houses over that way.' But I don't think I got though to him". Agents said Hodgkinson had a handgun and a rifle. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., told CNN. He was wounded in the gun battle with police.

"The security detail saved a lot of lives", he said. Barton said his son, Jack, got under an SUV.

Charles Orear, 50, a restaurant manager from St Louis, where Hodgkinson lived and worked as a home inspector, and who became friendly with him while campaigning in Iowa for Sanders in 2006, was surprised to hear about the shooting of Representative Scalise.

That's according to the New York Republican's spokeswoman, Hannah Andrews, who said her office alerted Capitol Police. Matt Mika Mika, a lobbyist for Tyson Foods, was helping with practice when he was shot.

He was in a critical condition Wednesday night and doctors said he would need several more operations.
