Jeff Sessions does little to inspire public confidence

15 Juin 2017

Sessions cited the unnamed policy to deflect questions about how President Trump dealt with the Russian Federation inquiry and the firing of FBI Director James Comey.

The attorney general also dodged numerous questions, arguing that he "cannot and will not violate my duty to protect the confidential communications I have with the president", Sessions said.

"I have never met with or had any conversation with any Russians or any foreign officials concerning any type of interference with any campaign or election", stated Sessions, according to Los Angeles Times.

Though the Justice Department maintains that it has fully disclosed the extent of Sessions' foreign contacts past year, lawmakers have continued to press him for answers about an April 2016 event at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, where both Sessions and Kislyak attended a foreign policy speech by Trump.

Immediately after his testimony, Sessions was widely criticised for leaving many key questions unanswered with statements such as "I don't recall" and "I have no recollection". And he can expect questions about his involvement in Comey's May 9 firing, the circumstances surrounding his decision to recuse himself from the FBI's investigation, and whether any of his actions - such as interviewing candidates for the FBI director position or meeting with Trump about Comey - violated his recusal pledge. Sessions noted in his testimony Tuesday that Comey had previously been deputy attorney general.

On Thursday it was painfully clear from the testimony of fired FBI Director James Comey that Mr. Trump needs a lot of help from someone who knows how a president should behave.

Sessions says he was involved in Comey's firing because he oversees the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Comey discussed a host of issues surrounding Russia's meddling in the 2016 presidential election, though his remarks also raised questions that were directed at Sessions on Tuesday. There are none! I can tell you that for absolute certainty.

In his dramatic appearance before former colleagues, Sessions contradicted a contention made by Comey at a hearing before the same panel last week. You - this is a secret innuendo being leaked out there about me, and I don't appreciate it, and I tried to give my best and truthful answers to any committee I've appeared before, and it's really people sort of suggesting innuendo that I have been not honest about matters, and I've tried to be honest.

Senator Angus King, an independent, questioned Sessions' legal basis for refusing to answer questions after Sessions said Trump had not invoked executive privilege regarding the conversations.

Corallo also said the complaint may be filed to the Justice Department's Office of Professional Responsibility rather than its Office of Inspector General. The probe over the possible ties between Trump's campaign and Russian Federation is now in the hands of special counsel Bob Mueller following the Comey dismissal. Investigators have also been looking for any evidence of possible financial crimes among Trump associates, officials said.

Mueller III to investigate Trump's own conduct marks a major turning point in the almost year-old FBI investigation, which until recently focused on Russian meddling during the presidential campaign and on whether there was any coordination between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin. Prior to his confirmation hearing in January, Sessions had not listed meetings with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak last July at the Republican convention in Cleveland, and again in September in then-Sen.

He was asked about the event several times, and said at one point, "If any brief interaction occurred in passing with the Russian ambassador during that reception, I do not remember it".

"I believe it was the next day that [Comey] said something, expressed concern, about being left alone with the president", Sessions said. Our Department of Justice rules on proper communications between the department and the White House have been in place for years.
