House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, aides shot at baseball practice in Virginia

"Let's have conversations about those", said Rep. Martha McSally (R) of Arizona, who has received death threats for her views.

MedStar Washington tweeted that House whip Scalise, of Louisiana, is in a critical condition following surgery. Rand Paul, R-Ky., said of the Capitol Police.

James Hodgkinson, 66, of Belleville, Illinois, was the alleged shooter, and was pronounced dead Wednesday morning.

That plea for a recognition of everyone's humanity was a sentiment that echoed throughout the Capitol building and down Pennsylvania Avenue to the White House on Wednesday.

Police in Alexandria, Va., said five people were provided medical transport and that a suspect was in custody.

He added that Scalise is a "patriot and he's a fighter".

As majority whip, Scalise is the third-ranking Republican in the House.

Just as one of those officers emerged from her auto, Loudermilk said, Hodgkinson shot at her but missed, blowing out the window of a vehicle on the street. "In the field, I see Rep. Scalise is shot but moving, and he's trying to drag himself through the dirt and out into the outfield".

"I don't think about it every day".

"Nobody would have survived without the Capitol Hill police", Paul said on CNN. The inquiry is raising questions about a possible political motivation.

Two officers were injured along with a congressional aide and a lobbyist.

Here's what we know about the shooting. Rep. Jared Huffman, D-Calif., said his team was practicing when they heard about the attack on the Republicans. His condition was not immediately known.

Within minutes, Alexandria police arrived.

Virginia shooter who shot Republicans was a Trump hater
He was squeezing off five or six rounds at a time, according to the report of the incident, and fired about 50 shots in all. The FBI says the man who opened fire on a group of Republican members of Congress on Wednesday is 66-year-old James T.

"I commend the heroic officers of the Capitol Police and the Alexandria Police Department. Thank you to them and our law enforcement officials across this country who put their own lives on the line to protect and serve their communities".

Two firearms were recovered from the scene - a 9 mm handgun and a Chinese-made SKS 7.62 mm assault rifle, CNN reported.

"He went through this a couple of times", Flake told reporters. The Democrats had reportedly practiced earlier in the morning.

Earlier this month he used Twitter to denounce the mayor of London in the wake of a terror attack that left seven dead there. The congressman knelt down and prayed with him as paramedics flood the area, scrambling to treat six different people - including the shooter. There was a clip with at least eight shots. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., screamed at one of them.

"He was coherent. He was asking for water", Flake said of his colleague.

Rep. Brad Wenstrup of OH, a doctor, was at the practice and helped treat the victims, Flake said. Brooks took off his belt and cinched a tourniquet around Barth's calf.

Several lawmakers spoke of the unifying nature of Wednesday morning's activity - baseball - as a kind of metaphor for what America can be.

The ATF and FBI were at the shooting scene to assist in the investigation. Children were walking to a school approximately a block away. For a moment, the field went quiet as they wondered what the noise was.

Attacks on members of Congress are rare.

"Any time we need anything, we go to Steve and he makes it happen", Abraham said.

Tenney's spokeswoman, Hannah Andrews, said the office alerted U.S. Capitol Police.

Alex Moe, Hallie Jackson and Pete Williams reported from Washington, and Erik Ortiz, Tom Winter, Jonathan Dienst and Ariana Brockington reported from NY.
