Gunman Fires On Congressional Baseball Practice In Virginia

15 Juin 2017

Hodgkinson was wounded in a gunfight with Capitol Hill police who were at the scene, and police said he later died.

MedStar Washington Hospital Center said Wednesday evening Scalise was shot once in the left hip and suffered injuries to his bones and internal organs, causing severe bleeding.

Williams, who has been playing on the Republicans' congressional baseball team for a decade, witnessed the shooting, but was not shot himself, although he sustained injuries while attempting to escape the shooter, 66-year-old James Hodgkinson.

"We may have our differences, but we do well, in times like these, to remember that everyone who serves in our nation's capital is here because, above all, they love our country".

The president was accompanied by White House doctor Ronny Jackson.

"While the president would like to attend the game and show his support for all of these courageous public servants, he has been advised that there is not enough time to follow Secret Service protocols", Press Secretary Sean Spicer said Wednesday.

Rep. Steve Scalise, one of the truly great people, is in very tough shape - but he is a real fighter.

Politicians noted their good fortune in having armed protectors on hand.

Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle called for a new dialogue on lowering the partisan temperature, and Trump urged Americans to come together as he assumed the role of national unifier for one of the first times in his presidency.

House of Representatives proceedings were cancelled for the day and instead speaker Paul Ryan of Wisconsin and Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi of California issued their own calls for unity. Tim Kaine said. "We have wonderful security on the Hill, but anytime we're off, we don't". On Thursday House proceedings were to resume as usual, and lawmakers were returning to the Capitol in search of some semblance of normalcy.

According to his Facebook page, Hodgkinson was a fervent supporter of Sanders, the feisty independent who battled Hillary Clinton for the Democratic presidential nomination a year ago. Sanders said he denounced the violence "in the strongest possible terms".

Scalise's position as whip in the Republican-controlled House makes him one of the most senior figures in Congress.

His campaign for the whip job had a Louisiana flair that included distribution of "Geaux Scalise" T-shirts and a Cajun dinner with sausage, oysters and gumbo.

Two Capitol police exchanged gunfire with the lone gunman carrying a rifle, congressmen said.

"This shooting is an attack on all who serve and on all who participate in our democracy", Giffords said.

The charity baseball game the Republicans were practicing for - that will go on as scheduled tomorrow night.

The gunman was believed to have been in the Alexandria area since March, Slater said.

Hodgkinson's Facebook page is largely political.

Shortly after 7 a.m., a man consumed by hate opened fire on Republican members of Congress as they practiced.

The team practices at E Monroe Ave in Alexandria, Virginia.

"All of us receive the aggressive comments", Fortenberry said.

"We all need to take a deep breath, we need to slow down, we need to be conscience of what is being said and how it's said", Jenkins said.

The gunman had a rifle and "a lot of ammo", said Sen.

Shots rang out for more than four minutes in Nathan's video. "They saved everybody's life", Paul said on CNN.

Congressional leaders typically attend the event and former President Barack Obama - famous for shunning opportunities to rub shoulders with lawmakers - even went two years ago, watching from the Democratic dugout.

"It's a good way raise money for charity and for members to get to know each other", said Rep. Cedric Richmond, D-La., whose election in 2010 upended the competitive balance of the annual event. Rep. Mike Doyle, the Democratic baseball manager, touched Barton's arm at the podium to console him.

Rep. Jeff Duncan of SC said he had just left the practice and encountered the apparent gunman in the parking lot before the shooting.

"He asked me who was practising this morning, Republicans or Democrats, and I said, "That's the Republicans practising", Duncan told reporters. Crystal Griner and David Bailey - were also hurt.

A congressional aide and a lobbyist were also wounded.

But any member of Congress can get extra security, if needed.

Griner and Bailey are both members of Scalise's security detail.

"Why does it have to be a game all the time between the Democrats and the Republicans?"
