Durant shines as Warriors win title

15 Juin 2017

The Golden State Warriors beat the Cleveland Cavaliers to regain the NBA Championship with a 4-1 series win.

Durant's first National Basketball Association championship win also came with the title of Finals MVP.

The Warriors are poised to dominate the league over the next several years, especially if Kevin Durant agrees to take less money to keep the team together.

Golden State, who beat Cleveland in the 2015 finals only to lose to them a year ago after squandering a 3-1 series lead, set a record in this season's playoffs by losing just one of their 16 games, their only loss coming in Game 4 of the finals.

Kevin Durant was criticised by many for joining an already-stacked Golden State Warriors team last July but it is hard to question the move after watching how seamlessly he fit in with the NBA's latest champions.

In the third quarter, "Cleveland" with LeBron James and Kyrie Irving managed to get at a distance of five points.

There was debate all year about whether the Warriors and Cavaliers were good for the NBA, since it was essentially a foregone conclusion that these dominant teams would be square off in the NBA Finals.

Golden State Warriors fan Lord Rab cheers following Game 5 of the NBA Finals at Oracle Arena in Oakland.

"We were able to get them past year, and they went out and got one of the best players that this league has ever seen", James said.

"We weren't supposed to be here", Kevin Durant said. Durant was front and center in that turnaround, hitting the go-ahead 3-pointer to provide the signature moment of the Warriors rally - and the series as a whole - in an 11-0 finish.

Durant took home a championship and a Finals Most Valuable Player award Monday night by adding to the Golden State Warriors' strength in numbers that overpowered James' strength in statistics. The Cavaliers went on to win three games in a row to secure the franchise's first title.

Wrapping up the series in five games meant the Warriors came through the post-season with a 16-1 record, with only the defeat in game four keeping them from perfection. "And I know he wants to be here and we want him here. To be here with these guys is wonderful", Durant said, who poured in with 39 points, seven rebounds, and five assists in 40 minutes.

Iguodala chipped in with 20 points off the bench and Draymond Green had a 10-point, 12-rebound double-double for the Warriors, who topped 100 points for the 17th straight time in the playoffs.

He also added 8.2 rebounds and 5.2 assists a game.
