Dramatic video captures sounds of gunfire at congressional baseball practice

15 Juin 2017

Noah Nathan happened to be walking his dog Wednesday morning near the Alexandria, Virginia park where several dozen members of Congress were targeted by an IL gunman, and videotaped the shootout between the gunman and Capitol Police.

MedStar Washington Hospital Center said Wednesday evening Scalise was shot once in the left hip and suffered injuries to his bones and internal organs, causing severe bleeding.

Two Capitol Police officers who intervened to stop the shooter were also injured along with a congressional staffer and a lobbyist.

"We prayed as a team for Majority Whip Steve Scalise, Capitol police and staff that were shot", Ruiz said.

"An attack on one of us is an attack on all of us", Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan said afterward to applause from his colleagues, Republicans and Democrats. "He said. 'OK, thanks, ' turned around".

Donnelly went on to say he was participating at the time with the Democratic team in D.C. and was OK. "Because I'm a member of congress I could have been on a baseball field where someone could have did what they did".

Officers returned fire at Hodgkinson, and the suspect died from his injuries.

Scalise was fielding balls on second base when he was shot, Flake said.

Republican House of Representatives Majority Whip Scalise was in stable condition, a statement said on Wednesday. President Donald Trump is calling for unity after a shooting that injured a top House Republican leader.

Hodgkinson was a volunteer for Vermont Sen.

Republican Rep. Brad Wenstrup of OH, a pediatric surgeon who served in the Army in Iraq and who treated Scalise on the field, tweeted, "You never expect a baseball field in America to feel like being back in a combat zone in Iraq, but this morning it did". Many pondered security changes that could be in store, but most acknowledged it was not feasible to give all 535 lawmakers on Capitol Hill a security detail.

Lawmakers took cover in the dugout.

Texas Republican Rep. Joe Barton, the manager of the Republicans' team, recalled in an emotional news conference that his son was "at practice this morning, and he had 25 dads".

"The guy's down to a handgun, he dropped his rifle, they shoot him, I go over there, they put him in handcuffs", Conaway said, adding that if the shooter had "gotten inside the fence, where a bunch of guys were holed up in the dugout, it would have been like shooting fish in a barrel". The man calmly asked which party's lawmakers were practicing and Duncan told him they were the Republicans. He was listed in critical condition following surgery, and multiple procedures are expected. Also shot and injured was Matt Mika, who is employed by Tyson Foods.

Right around the same time, the congressman came under scrutiny when it was revealed he may have inadvertently spoken at an event organized by a white supremacist group when he was a state representative. "No other members of leadership have detail or protection". Many Democrats and Republicans refrained from politicizing the attack or casting it as a referendum on the Second Amendment.

Sen. David Perdue suggested that perhaps police should be present for groups of lawmakers gathering outside the Capitol, but he argued it was important for Congress not to wall itself off from the public. Gabby Giffords was targeted by a gunman in 2011.
