Bernie Sanders condemns shooting by gunman who volunteered for his presidential campaign

15 Juin 2017

U.S. Rep. Mike Bost said his office has had previous contact with the man who reportedly opened fire on a Wednesday morning baseball practice in Virginia, wounding a GOP congressman and several others before he was shot and fatally wounded.

Multiple law enforcement sources have identified the man as 66-year-old James T. Hodgkinson of Belleville, Illinois.

Scalise, 51, the No. 3 House Republican leader first elected to the House in 2008, was in stable condition and undergoing surgery.

The shooting took place around 7:00am (1100 GMT) as the Republican team practised for the charity game, a well-loved showdown between Senate and House members of both the Republican and Democratic camps. According to the congressmen, killer asked them whether it's a meet of Republicans or Democrats.

The FBI says it is actively investigating Hodgkinson's "associates, whereabouts, social media impressions, and potential motivations". "We can get our country back if we all vote the right way".

Bost said the calls never appeared threatening or led him to believe Hodgkinson posed a threat to anyone's safety. Another status posted on March 22 says that Trump is a traitor who destroys democracy. "Let me be as clear as I can be: Violence of any kind is unacceptable in our society, and I condemn this action in the strongest possible terms".

Euille, a general contractor, even tried to help Hodgkinson get a job, The Post reports.

"I know he wasn't happy with the way things were going, the election results and stuff", the shooter's brother told the newspaper.

She and a friend attempted to flee by auto, but Hodgkinson allegedly "opened the door, cut the ignition and used a pocketknife to cut the seatbelt", according to the News-Democrat.

In April 2006, he was also arrested for using bodily force in a family argument, and subsequently hitting a man on the head with the wooden stock of his gun and firing a round as the victim fled. Battery charges against Hodgkinson and his wife were later dismissed.

The Alabama lawmaker said he colleague "crawled into the outfield, leaving a trail of blood".

Two of the other people shot were at George Washington University Hospital in critical condition, according to a statement from the hospital.

Zach Barth, a legislative correspondent in the office of Rep. Roger Williams, R-Texas, was injured as well as Matt Mika, the director of government relations at Tyson Foods.

Trump described Scalise as a "very good friend", a "patriot" and a "fighter". She said the shooting "went on for quite a while".

Witnesses earlier said Scalise was felled by a bullet to his hip, and crawled across the field during the shooting.

The police report is one of several provided by the sheriff's department on Hodgkinson, who, according to the White House, died from injuries.

Calhoun said he thinks he saw Hodgkinson at a Walgreens in Belleville about three months ago, but he looked a little different so he didn't say anything.

Authorities confirmed that Capitol Police officers were on scene when the shooting happened and exchanged gunfire with the shooter.

Hodgkinson was then taken down by one of Mr Scalise's security detail just after 7am on Wednesday (9pm Wednesday AEST) and later died in hospital.

In his speech, Sanders said real change "can only come about through nonviolent action, and anything else runs against our most deeply held American values".
